In his short musical career and even shorter time in the spotlight it’s hard to appreciate the immediate impact Lil Peep had on music once most ears discovered him earlier this year. I first stumbled upon Peep’s music when he released “Crybaby” in 2016. Peep was in many ways for me everything (musically) I wanted out of the culture that had been building around the #Bloglin. This seamless blend of seemingly disparate influences all fully fleshed out and re-contextualized in new ways. Peep wasn’t the first to try this, but he did sidestep many of the pitfalls of past attempts by way of his talent and very earnest approach. He spoke openly, honestly and very plainly about his depression, his anxieties, his heartbreaks and his use of drugs to cope with all of it. While I admit that I had aged out of fanboying to what he was doing, I found it compelling nonetheless. And I really wanted to see where he would go next. Earlier this year Peep leapfrogged into the mainstream music discourse adding a welcome element previously absent… and now before 2017 is even over, he’s gone. He had just turned 21 and it’s really all just very heartbreaking. Although his music was filled with the sort of tension that made each new release seem like it may be his last (I’m not gonna lie and say that wasn’t an element of his draw), you still never wanted this. You hoped for the happy ending, especially for an underdog like Peep. I’m sure there will be a million hot takes on the validity and quality of Peep’s music (and circumstances of his death) in the coming days, weeks, and years... that’s expected. If you have one though please just consider this… there is no denying that in a very short while Peep captured a zeitgeist – and personal tastes aside – that’s a very impressive feat which speaks to how powerful an artist's connection (whether you “get it” or not) is with an audience. You don’t need to like Peep’s music, but at least respect that about him and the many fans he touched in his short time. Thank you to @lamoursupreme for the image so I had something to accompany this lil bit I wanted to get out. - @mypalthecrook #RIPLilPeep
