I don’t know what to add to the words from people who genuinely KNEW him (Vanessa Friedman @nytimesfashion ‘s obituary is thus far standout...) But all I can say is how much of a privilege it was to witness that final @azzedinealaiaofficial couture show in July (a return to the calendar after six years)
It was a master class in precision of cut, rigorous self-editing, and above all an honest conviction in what Alaïa believed in, that didn’t bend towards ephemerality
May he rest in peace. Off to watch that lovely Joe McKenna documentary again www.joesfilm.com
PS Incidentally I was aghast to learn from a fashion school tutor that some students didn’t even know who Alaïa was. Please. That’s a travesty. Let it be rectified.
