Netsuke were often inspired by the natural world, portraying animals or scenes from nature. This example depicts Chinese general Guan Yu (c. AD 160–220) riding on horseback. His horse Chi Tu was said to be completely red in colour and capable of travelling 1,000 li (around 400km) in a single day. This intricate carving stands just over 3cm tall.
