the rains cleared after hours of torrential downpours battered the clapboards & our little party of four plus two Great Danes made for the door, bursting out into the cold clear Sunday sunshine - happy to shake off the cabin fever

we walked the back roads in town, cutting through the quiet woods and deserted railroad tracks .

we walked along the edges of wizened corn fields filled with puddles after the rains- reflecting the wide cloud filled skies. blue grey against parched yellow stalks

we pulled the collars of our coats up higher as the sun set and the winds whipped up across the field - cheeks pinky and cold - geese flew through the darkening sky, noiseless silhouettes, and we watched our breath rise in time with the thin pale ribbons of smoke emanating from the little brick chimneys of houses as we passed .

and we began to circle back toward the house - applewood fires on our minds
