But for the bulk of 2017, the singer has enjoyed such victories. She’s one of those artists who grabs you immediately. From “Drew Barrymore” to “Broken Clocks,” the songs on her acclaimed ‘Ctrl’ album feel like a pal cutting through the bull and telling you exactly how she feels – even if it’s a little uncomfortable. She wasn’t into music early on, though. As she grew older, she was sniffing around a career in fashion. But when her brother, a striving MC, asked for some help on a few tracks, her interest piqued, and she started writing herself. After a couple of mixed tapes, Top Dawg Management reached out, and things started rollin’. Even her lighter musical moments are marked by a depth of intention. “Wish I was a normal girl,” she sings on one ‘Ctrl’ track. But the answer drops quick: “I’ll never be.” Fine with us.
