#SpeakingInDance | The snow scene in “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker,” which opens on Friday at @lincolncenter, is a dazzling group effort full of brisk footwork and sparkling jumps. It’s also, in the words of @nycballet dancer @ashh0d, “super puffy” — #ballerina shorthand for choreography that leaves a dancer out of breath. Once she had a better handle on the stamina aspect, @ashh0d began paying attention to the other dancers: “It’s such a community piece,” she said. For @marylizard, the moments of eye contact are exciting: “It’s this tangible energy that’s being passed back and forth.” But, she stressed, no 2 snows are alike. “Snow can feel amazing or, like, that was a tornado out there.” And there’s the snow itself: It transforms the stage into a veritable blizzard, but what happens when it gets stuck in the dancers’ eyes and mouths? “It’s like you are fighting to survive,” Ashley told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “And that’s also where the community part comes in. You can hear your friend choking, and you’re just telling them: ‘It’s OK. You’ve got this.’ ” @_flodur made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance. #❄️❄️❄️
