26 years ago, I wrote to President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, asking for an appointment with him because he was my hero. I received a letter saying that the President was super busy but that he thanked me for my kind words towards him. Last Thursday, on the way to his new book premier, “NAFTA, allies and adversaries”, he told me: “Eduardo, I’m happy that you’re coming with us”. People don’t know what Mexico was before President Salinas became President, it was not a third world country, but a fifteenth world country. He was the creator of NAFTA, he contacted President Bush Sr after renegotiating the National Debt of Mexico with more than 600 banks. To go to Acapulco from DF, it took 6:30 hours by car before the super highways that he built, now I drive it in 2:45. He really put my country in the map. Before NAFTA, Mexico was in such a terrible state that it almost appeared to be a communist country (Not that bad obviously). He took everyday services like Electricity, clean water and telephone to millions of super low income houses across the country through his program “Solidarity”. 99 percent of Mexicans wanted him to get re-elected, I would pray every night wishing that this was the case. I even wanted to become President to follow his lead and help my country, hence the letter that I wrote to him. After him, the country went down the drain. I’ve been lucky enough to talk to him on a one to one basis like 6 times. He even called me, to my surprise, to give his condolences when my girl Onix died. “Eduardo, this is Carlos Salinas, I am very sorry for the loss of your Little Animal, I know how much you Love them”. Who does that? Only a super classy Human being. This is the first time that I see him talk in public, so it was a dream come true. He signed me and Gorilla our books. He is Gorilla’s Hero too and Gorilla was there on Thursday. And even though people always forget what someone did for them, I don’t. So thank you President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, for your work towards our country and for your friendship. I don’t, and I will never forget, how much you helped Mexico. With respect, Eduardo Serio.
