A traditional sheepskin coat blows in the wind in Turtkul, Uzbekistan, on a highway that follows the ancient Silk Road. It wasn’t a single road but a network of commercial routes that once traversed much of the Eastern Hemisphere.

Personal Note: While driving in western Uzbekistan earlier this year, I caught a glimpse upon a most majestic herders jacket, swaying in the wind along the side of road, hoisted in air by a lone tree. Asking my friend, Aziz, to stop, he wondered why I found this sheepskin jacket so fascinating. For around 30 minutes, I filmed and photographed this twirling, feeling this detailed regalia of a slowly vanishing era summarized much of what today is still the Silk Road…a stretch of earth now covered in asphalt, used for centuries by traders, today plying goods on trucks rather than camel caravans. Once back in the car, Aziz asked, “Was it good?”. I smiled…
