In 1804, Antonio Canova was commissioned to create the ‘Venus Italica’ by Ludovico I, King of Etruria, after the ancient Medici Venus was taken by the French for the Musée Napoleon. #ChristiesClassicWeek

Completed in 1812, the sculpture was unveiled at the Palazzo Pitti to great acclaim. Canova later replicated the celebrated Venus with this version, pictured here, a highlight of our Classic Week auctions.
