Article from PBS SoCal at bottom. *EDIT BELOW* Thinking of those that are losing their homes and the damage done by the enormous wildfires and also the fire departments and especially the incarcerated people that are essentially being forced into the modern-day evolution of American slavery to make money for the state and corporations. # **EDIT** - In the comments section, some folks are seeming to say that this is not slavery. I never said that it was. I said it was the “modern day evolution of.” A cell phone is a “modern day evolution of” the telephone created in 1876 but I would not (nor did I in this article’s case) say that it was the same. If you are unclear on the origins of policing in the U.S. beginning with night patrols (slave catchers) and the 13th amendment (that still stands) and reads “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, EXCEPT AS PUNISHMENT FOR A CRIME whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” A number of people are saying, “do the crime, do the time.” This is an overly simplistic view of how our criminal justice system works. Have you never broken the law (used weed/drugs, sped in your car, stole, etc) or have you never been caught? Are you white and many times less likely to be stopped and harassed than if you were a POC? And less likely to be charged? And more likely to be able to afford bail and a private attorney? And less likely to spend more time in jail? Perhaps you were one of the 900,000 false summonses that were just dismissed as the NYPD has been forced to pay $75M in a class action suit for not having probable cause. The very fact that we have 25% of the world’s prison population and only 5% of the population in the U.S. is an enormous issue and a result of the fact that we have awful social safety nets and have purposefully designed a system and a War on Drugs that has especially decimated communities of color.
