After years of oppression, balloon sellers reemerge in the dust of the ruined city of #Kabul, one day after the #Taliban fled the Afghan capital. Under the unflinching grip of Taliban rule, the freedom for children to enjoy simple acts like playing with balloons, listening to music, or freely expressing themselves, was considered an offense, punishable with fines or imprisonment. After more than six years of extreme ideological control, the secret lives of children, once hidden away in cellars, under beds, and in locked trucks, emerged, and in some cases just moments after the Taliban were ousted. No matter how oppressed the human spirit, we will always yearn for simple pleasures. Scenes like this reaffirm our bond with humility, kindness, and fun. Play is a basic human right that can never be abandoned.
