Cheetahs are currently under discussion, with conservationists pushing for an endangered species status to give these big cats extra protection. With only around 7000 cheetahs remaining and their habitat and prey both disappearing, it’s surprising that they are not already listed as endangered. This cat roams Kenya’s vast open plains, focusing largely on Thomson’s gazelles and baby wildebeest. For now there is still more than enough prey, but a growing human population and increasingly severe droughts are taking their toll here too. Cheetahs are a key species for projects for the National Geographic Big Cats Initiative to fund, working to ensure that these slender, specialist hunters will continue to roam and race across these savannahs. #bigcats #bigcatsinitiative #cheetah #thisismytrophy
