A 2-month-old boy, just over 4 lb. (2 kg), is weighed at a hospital in Saada, Yemen, on Oct. 29, 2017. For the past six months, the Ministry of Health coffers have been virtually empty. The country's entire health care system is in a state of collapse, along with much of its infrastructure. After rebels from the mainly Shi'ite Houthi movement swept through the country in September 2014, taking the capital, Sana'a, a civil war began in earnest. A proxy war between the region's rival powers has since left over 10,000 people dead, half of them civilians, and 3 million displaced. The Houthis still control about a fourth of the territory, including Sana'a. But coalition warplanes have pummeled cities and towns held by the rebels, leaving mosques, schools and other public buildings little more than rubble. Two-thirds of the population is now dependent on humanitarian aid. More than half of Yemen's medical centers have closed; the personnel who have not deserted have worked for months without hope of payment. Meanwhile, civilians are continuing their descent into hell.
