A large manatee rests in Florida’s Crystal River, while fish feed on the algae covering its body. Manatees are threatened in the wild by a variety of factors, from boat strikes and red tide to the loss of warm water springs and sea grass due to climate change.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, 520 manatees were found dead in waterways across the state in 2016, marking the third deadliest year since record keeping began. Of these deaths, at least 104 were watercraft-related.
Despite these alarming numbers, in 2017 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service downgraded protections for the species from “endangered” to “threatened,” citing an overall increases in manatee populations.
