Apartment blocks in Murmansk, Northern Russia by @simoncroberts. Murmansk was the last city founded in the Russian Empire. In 1915, World War I needs led to the construction of the railroad from Petrozavodsk to an ice-free location on the Murman Coast in the Russian Arctic, to which Russia's allies shipped military supplies. Today it remains by far the largest city north of the Arctic Circle and is a major port on the Arctic Ocean. Winter in Arctic Russia, finds a region shrouded in darkness nearly 24 hours a day, a phenomenon known as Polyarnye Nochi (Polar Nights). Throughout December until mid-January, the sun remains below the horizon and there is only a faint glow of light visible around midday.
