In 1848, in an attempt to clear his mounting debts, the Duke of Buckinghamshire was forced to sell the entire contents of Stowe House. One of the lots from the sale was this portrait.

Although the identity of the artist remains a mystery, it is thought to be the only portrait of the Bard completed during his lifetime.

Eight years after the sale, the portrait was the first acquisition of the newly established National Portrait Gallery in London (@nationalportraitgallery).
