Painted directly onto lapis-lazuli, this jewel-like work of the Crucifixion With Mary Magdalen Kneeling At The Cross was painted by famed Florentine artist Alessandro Allori in 1602 for Ferdinando I de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany (1549-1609). Striking for its exquisite detail, the beautiful blue of the lapis stone was deliberately left unpainted by the artist to serve as the background sky.
