#JasperJohns had his first exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery in 1958, when he was twenty-seven years old. From that show, MoMA acquired three paintings. Sixty years of extraordinary art making followed. An artist of tremendous depth, Johns has produced a body of work as densely layered with materials—paint, wax encaustic, charcoal, and ink, among others—as with images.
