A very happy birthday to the woman who defines beauty with substance, who rules with compassion, who energizes our nation with her warm and inspiring spirit, the one and only, former First Lady Michelle Obama.
When I first launched my brand, I used to call my mother in Nepal with such excitement any time a celebrity wore one of my pieces on the red carpet or the street. And I’m talking major stars and inspiring women— women including Demi Moore, Zoe Saldana, and Rachael Weisz. Women I was always so elated to see bring my vision, both of my clothes, and of my brand ideals, to life. My mother would always respond with, “call me when you’ve dressed the First Lady.” Finally about a year into business, I had the honour of picking up the phone and saying, “mom, it happened. The First Lady Michelle Obama is in my dress.” My mother’s response was, “now, you are not just a designer. You have a platform, and responsibility to represent our country, Nepal.” So thank you dearest Mrs. Obama for giving me the platform, the responsibility, the honour and the pride for myself, for my brand, and for my both of my countries.
