Video by @Joel Sartore | Salish suckers like this one photographed at @arochaint in @arochacanada are a unique, remnant species that managed to survive the Ice Age by living in portions of rivers that didn't freeze over. These fish are considered rare in both Canada and Washington state, where they are monitored to help prevent them from further declines. Salish suckers are river-bottom dwellers, most often found in slow-moving, deep, freshwater pools; however, they spawn in nearby riffles (faster moving water over gravel).
Salish suckers were thought to be locally extinct from the Little Campbell River, where this one is from. It is here that A Rocha Canada does most of its conservation work, and they recently discovered a small population that still exists in the river. Recent mark-recapture studies have found that there are at least 280 individuals in the Little Campbell River population. A Rocha will continue to check on these fish annually, along with monitoring water quality. The organization also works to enhance streamside vegetation and create wetlands to improve habitat.
