Home. Get out of the truck. It’s dark. Let myself in. Put down my keys. Walk outside again and see the moon, then immediately a shooting star. She’s been at the hospital all day, was so brave, so full of spirit long before she went under. She’s a warrior: one of those women who come from and who birthed incredible, spine of the family women. They’re a strong line of country women. When I was a kid, I’d walk the few miles over there, through the fields, over the creek on a chunky barked fallen oak, and up the driveway, usually on a twisted ankle (always a twisted ankle). The dogs would greet me en masse, an ambush of whipping tails that’d I’d suffer through, until I opened and closed the sliding glass door finally safely inside. From behind a wall or around the corner she’d say: “The cereal’s in the pantry right behind you, sugar second shelf from the bottom”. That’s why I was there, because my own mom wouldn’t let me eat processed sugar. I’d sit down at the little formica countertop, and twist my arm high above the bowl and let it descend like a waterfall until it grew into a small peak of spastic fairytale . Then I’d crunch all that sugar deeply into the caverns of my gums: heaven to re-taste long into the rest of the day. But now she’s fragile — just out of surgery — head wrapped in a medical turban, smile small and as hospitable as ever: “You’re tired. Go home. You’ve been here all day.” You are so beautiful. It’s you who really looked after me and made me feel that I wasn’t forever lost in the brush of pre-man invisibility. #thankyou #countrylife #women #mothers
