And so it began....appropriately on a cold snowy overcast day. Better to start in bad conditions right....? How much worse could it get? @コンラッド・アンカー acclimating to the vertical as we started exploring a new route on the northwest buttress of Ulvetanna. Conrad spotted the route within a few minutes of landing on the glacier. I always appreciate Conrad’s refined taste in route selection and think it’s a good sign when a line is obvious. Certainly aesthetics play a role in choosing a new route - it’s hard to commit to a line if it isn’t inspiring or doesn’t make sense visually. The route Conrad glassed is both and has nice geometry to it. The line tackles the center of the main big wall on the northwest buttress eventually connecting a long sharply defined ridge to a steep rock head wall above with another bonus 1000ft of mixed alpine pitches to the top. Rock, snow, ice, simple yet complex....and a bit intimidating. Perfect. Fenriskjeften Range, Queen Maud Land, Antarctica.
