Inspired by an exceptional watercolour by J. M. W. Turner – offered in our New York auction on 30 January – art critic Alastair Sooke and our specialist Harriet Drummond examine other watercolour studies by the artist at Tate Britain, London.
.
Turner made numerous visits to Switzerland in the early 1840s, where he created thousands of sketches, drawings and paintings of Lake Lucerne. He bequeathed all but one study from this series to Tate Britain – the exception offered in our upcoming auction.
.
‘Turner had an extraordinary drive and hunger for everything that was new,’ says Drummond. ‘He was particularly drawn to landscapes where land meets the water, because of the beautiful effects caused by light and weather.’
.
Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851), ‘The Lake of Lucerne from Brunnen, with a Steamer’ (detail). Pencil and watercolour with scratching out, 9 ¾ x 12 ⅛ in. (24.8 x 30.8 cm). Estimate: $800,000–1,200,000.
