Vêtu d’un costume bleu brodé d’argent et entouré d’objets d’étude comme un encrier, une plume, des livres ou encore un rouleau de papier représentant un plan, il arbore ses goûts artistiques raffinés. Peint à Rome vers 1761 – 1762 par Pompeo Batoni, Charles Joseph Crowle, le modèle, rassemble autour de lui ses souvenirs du Grand Tour en Italie. Ce tableau est un exemple typique des portraits d’aristocrates anglais qui pratiquaient ce long voyage en Europe pour parfaire leur éducation en art.

Wearing a blue outfit embroidered with silver and surrounded by various objects: an inkwell, a plume, books or and a scroll depicting a map, he’s showing us his sophisticated artistic taste. Painted in Rome, circa 1761 – 1762 by Pompeo Batoni, Charles Joseph Crowle, the model, surrounds himself with his souvenirs from the Grand Tour in Italy. This painting is a typical example of the portraits of the English aristocrats who were doing this long trip in Europe to fulfill their education in art.
