以前、ポーラ美術館で見て以来、僕の心の中に残っている作品がコチラ。巨匠パブロ・ピカソの「男の胸像」です。調べてみたら、キュビスムで描かれていました。

キュビスムとは、日本語では「立体派」とか「立方体派」と呼ばれ、20世紀初頭にパブロ・ピカソとジョルジュ・ブラックによって創始され、多くの追随者を産んだ現代美術の大きな動向です。

この作品は、1909年の夏、ピカソがバルセロナから西方へ200キロの高地にある村オルタに、恋人のフェルナンド・オリヴィエと一緒に滞在したときに生まれました。ピカソは「私の知識はすべて、オルタの村で学びとった」と後に語り、フェルナンドは「キュビスム誕生の地」と述べた場所だそうです。

対象物をまず線描でいくつかの面に分解し、さらにそれぞれの面は、黒、茶、灰色、緑などに限定した色彩のグラデーションで明暗を与え、画面全体の再構築を行っているのが特徴。

男の人が描かれているのは題名を見てもわかる通りなんですが……。直線や曲線やらで描かれていて、なんで？こんな描き方をピカソはするんだろうと思ってじっと見ていたんですね。近寄って見たり、ちょっと離れて見たり……。しばらく遠くで見ていて目を細めて見た瞬間、この絵の凄さに気づいたんです。

な、なんと港町の食堂にでもいそうな、ヒゲの濃いワイルドなおっさんが立体的に浮かび上がってきたんです。「うわ〜凄っ！」思わず声を出し、その場に立ち尽くしたのは言うまでもありません。

それ以来、ピカソの絵を見る時は、目を細めて見てしまう癖がついてしまったほど。皆さんも、ぜひこの絵を少し離して、目を細めて見て下さい。ね？ なんとなく僕が言った意味わかっていただけます？ 本当は、ポーラ美術館で本物を見て気絶して頂きたいのですが……（笑）
