Moving a herd of cattle in northeastern Nevada. The ear of my horse shows up in the lower image giving a sense of place, I guess, or at least shows I wasn’t following the cow camp in a truck. In those days through the 1970s, when I was in love with the subject of the American West, I often carried my own saddle. I could stay aboard a decent horse and I enjoyed riding, but I certainly wasn’t a horseman. Enjoying something and being skilled at it are not necessarily the same thing. There is a definite difference between being able to stay on a horse and trying to function as a photographer. There is a a big difference. As a photographer I’d discovered that the best way for me to get close to any subject was to immerse myself. I might not be a horseman, but I would ride. And, I think like being in a foreign country and trying to speak the local language, any effort is appreciated.
