23 years ago today my mother pulled a gun on her much younger boyfriend, and told him he wasn’t going anywhere. They were out at the ranch arguing about her breast that had been replaced because of the cancer. Earlier, they had been to Cambria, a seedy bar she liked to frequent, a few lemon drops running through her like something between rocket fuel and just blonde ambition, and he was threatening to leave. “You’re not going anywhere”, she reminded him as the 22 rifle, Chuck Connors style, rested at her hip, probably a slight smile on her face. She liked animals more than people, I think it’s safe to say. They were loyal and didn’t talk back. They were honest and straightforward: if they didn’t like you they bit you. If my mother didn’t like you, she bit you, plain and simple. So, he eventually made way for his truck and hightailed it outta there, down the dirt road, then onto Vineyard. She went after him in her Suburban. Nobody really knows what happened next. Some think she was avoiding a deer; I think she was going for her foot long cell phone. It doesn’t really matter as the romance ends at the reality. She hit that tree around 9:30. Old man Barlogio heard it from way down at the end of his driveway, from his little house — that lone oak tree made a loud noise, then went quiet. She died at around 1 that next morning, February 13th. 22 years ago, man. The animal lady. Lady Jane. The little Texan with a metal foot and the perpetual Kool King in her mouth, lipstick smeared all over the filter in a swirl of pinks and reds. I miss her. We miss her. It’s simple when you take out all the romanticism. Just a mom that her kids miss. #❤️ #?
