Our “Aloha Mis Amigos” print celebrates the rich heritage between Hawaii and Mexico. In the 1790s, King Kamehameha the First was gifted five cattle by an English navigator. The King declared the cattle sacred, which led to overpopulation and destruction of local agriculture. A sailor, who was granted permission to hunt the cattle, eventually domesticated them and established ranching on the Big Island. Years later, King Kamehameha III hired Mexican vaqueros to teach Hawaiian paniolos (cowboys) about ranching, and deepened the relationship between the two cultures.
