Starting in the late 1970s, Stephen Shore gradually abandoned urban and suburban areas in favor of more natural landscapes. He approached his new subject as an “experiment with space”—challenging himself to create scale and depth without elements like the street lamps and telegraph poles he had used to construct scenes in urban areas.
