50 years ago, #OTD, George and John set off for Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's #ashram in #Rishikesh, #India. Ringo and Paul arrived a few days later. 〰️ Paul: “I think by 1968 we were all a bit exhausted, spiritually. We’d been The Beatles, which was marvellous. We’d tried for it not to go to our heads and we were doing quite well - we weren’t getting too spaced out or big-headed - but I think generally there was a feeling of: ‘Yeah, well, it’s great to be famous, it’s great to be rich - but what’s it all for?’” 〰️ Whilst they were there, they created many of the compositions that would become songs on the ’#WhiteAlbum’. 〰️ John: “The funny thing about the camp was that although it was very beautiful and I was meditating about eight hours a day, I was writing the most miserable songs on earth. In ‘Yer Blues’, when I wrote, ‘I’m so lonely I want to die,’ I’m not kidding. That’s how I felt. Up there trying to reach God and feeling suicidal.
