Cet émouvant portrait d'un jeune garçon et d'un patricien florentin âgé a été réalisé par Domenico Ghirlandaio vers 1490. Le doux sourire plein de bonté du vieil homme et le regard confiant de l'enfant témoignent de l'affection qui les unit. Le cadrage serré de la scène et l'intensité touchante des regards contribuent à cette atmosphère d'intimité qui se dégage de cette double effigie d'un grand-père et de son petit-fils. Il se peut que ce tableau soit également une allégorie de deux âges de la vie. En effet, à l’image de la vieillesse, de la laideur de la maladie, s'oppose la pureté du profil de l'enfant au nez fin et à la bouche délicate.
L'exceptionnel talent de Ghirlandaio, son art de saisir une personnalité lui ont valu de nombreuses commandes de l'aristocratie florentine de la fin du XVe siècle.

This moving portrait of a boy with an aged Florentine patrician was painted by Domenico Ghirlandaio, circa 1490.The man's gentle, benevolent smile and the child's trusting gaze convey their mutual affection. The tight framing of the scene and the touching intensity of the looks being exchanged add to the intimate atmosphere suffusing this dual image of grandfather and grandson. This painting may also have allegorical significance: this image of age and the unsightliness induced by disease is in total contrast with the unsullied profile of the child, with his narrow nose and dainty mouth.
Ghirlandaio's exceptional skill and his ability to capture personality earned him a host of commissions from the Florentine aristocracy of the late 15th century.
