Mario Vargas Llosa isn’t a household name among American readers. But at 81, he remains a literary and political colossus across the Spanish-speaking world, and his novels have never felt more relevant. As a child, Mario buried himself in novels by Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo, Charles Dickens and Honoré de Balzac, dreaming of a life filled with adventure. He has written almost every morning of his life, publishing 59 books in 55 years. “If I didn’t write,” he told @parisreview in 1990, “I would blow my brains out, without a shadow of a doubt.” This week he has 3 books coming out. One, “The Call of the Tribe,” is a condensed history of 3 centuries of classical liberal thought that feels like his attempt to beat back the waves of nationalism and populism now flooding our world. What he most respects in a person, he told @nytmag, is integrity: “Consistency in what you believe, what you say and what you do.” And while his insistence on saying and doing exactly what he himself believes has left a scorched path in his personal life, it has also been the making of his career. @christopherandersonphoto took this portrait of #MarioVargasLlosa at home in Madrid for this week’s @nytmag.
