Although it looks like alien-beings from another world, it is actually a relative of sea stars. As I got older, I realized where Hollywood conceived of designs for some of its monsters. The discovery of the Western Interior Seaway, a vast, shallow ocean that in the Cretaceous Period ranged from what is now eastern Mexico all the way to northern Canada, provided proof that neither the planet nor the organisms inhabiting it remain static. Paleontologists found fossils belonging to the huge marine reptiles called the plesiosaurs and mosasaurs there, along with gigantic sharks, other fish, and crinoids, such as this beautiful specimen of Uintacrinus socialis from Kansas.
