This group of Japanese women are defining doula care in their country. What is a doula? A doula (/ˈduːlə/), also known as a birth companion, birth coach or post-birth supporter, is a non-medical person who stays with and assists a woman before, during, or after childbirth, to provide emotional support and physical help if needed. They also may provide support to the mother's partner and family. While they have gained popularity in the US over the past 15 or so years, American women who have access to them could increase substantially and that would really help to improve our deplorable maternal health statistics. Fun fact: Japan is ranked 12th in the world in maternal health and the U.S. is ranked 46th! America is one of 13 countries in the world with a rising maternal mortality ratio. Countries and their healthcare providers can learn from eachother. Let’s help increase awareness about doula care in Japan and let’s get doula and midwifery care reimbursed in the United States. #metoobirth #Whatispossible Thank you for allowing us to crash your doula training today @debrapascalibonaro 🙏🏽
