This marvellous photo was taken by @ihm_39 in our Egyptian Sculpture Gallery. This statue of King Amenhotep III is over 3,300 years old, and was made for his mortuary temple in Western Thebes. It was one of the largest temples in Egypt, and contained hundreds of statues of Amenhotep and the gods. The complex stood on the border between the desert and the lush fertile land by the River Nile – here the king sits on a throne decorated with plants from both Upper and Lower Egypt. It’s made from granodiorite, the same kind of rock as the Rosetta Stone.
