Getting a good stretch in for #PolarBearDay… The polar bear’s scientific name is ursus maritimus, meaning sea bear. And boy can they swim! We’re talking hundreds of miles at a time. Unfortunately, these distances have been increasing out of necessity due to sea ice shrinking in the Arctic. One mother polar bear was recorded swimming 426 miles straight. Polar bears are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List. But it is not too late to help them! The best thing we can do is reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. One straight forward way any household can do this is by conserving heating and cooling which accounts for roughly half the energy consumption in an average home, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
