Humpback whale calves stay with their mothers for around 12 months. 
During this period they maintain an incredibly gentle, close physical relationship which strengthens their bond and helps to keep the calf safe from predators.
Unlike humans, Humpback whales are conscious breathers. Adult humpbacks surface every 7-15 minutes to breathe but can remain underwater for up to 45 minutes. Calves must surface every 3-5 minutes.
