Students returned to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fa., for the first time on Feb. 28 since the country’s deadliest school shooting in five years. Samantha Fuentes, a student at the school, described the injuries she sustained on Feb. 14 when a former student opened fire, killing 17 people. The atmosphere inside was a mix of nerves and tempered excitement, according to news reports. Officials have made efforts to ease the transition back to school, placing armed police officers around the building and limiting school days to four hours this week. Rod Skirvin, vice president of the Police Benevolent Association in Broward, gave out carnations as thousands of students approached the school, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
