Magha Puja Day is an important Buddhist holiday celebrated on the full moon day of the third lunar month. In 2018, Magha Puja Day is March 1.

The name "Magha Puja" derives from merging of 2 Pali words together: "Magha" (third lunar month) and "Puja" (veneration). As a matter of fact, it's a veneration of Gautama Buddha and his teachings on the full moon day of the third lunar month originally given to his 1,250 disciples, all of whom were ordained by the Buddha himself and had attained enlightenment by that time, at the Veluvana bamboo grove, near Rājagaha in northern India ten months after the enlightenment of the Buddha. His teachings on such auspicious events is known as the Ovadapatimokha, which is considered as the heart of Buddhism and consists of the religion's purposes, principles, and procedures. Three most notable principles as indicated in the Ovadapatimokha are ceasing from evil, doing good deeds, and cleansing one's mind.

Magha Puja Day is observed in many Buddhist countries, including Thailand, by praying, making merits, and performing religious ceremonies at temples.
