This shirt meant business.

In the early 1900s, this style of shirt, known as a “shirtwaist,” was considered appropriate attire for women entering the workforce. Furthermore, for many women, their job was to create shirts like this in garment factories.

Working in a garment factory was difficult, often dangerous, work. Garment worker Clara Lemlich told the New York Evening Journal “The shops are unsanitary—that’s the word that is generally used, but there ought to be a worse one used. . . . At the beginning of every slow season, $2 is deducted from our salaries. We have never been able to find out what this is for.” Lemlich and her fellow garment workers pushed back against these conditions and organized one of the largest strikes by women in American history. While the strikers were able to change some of the working conditions, the work remained dangerous. Devastating fires like the one that ripped through the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory captured public attention and helped usher in new labor safety laws.
