This is how the media tries to pit us against each other for THEIR benefit. Many outlets do it, so before jumping to point out MSNBC or some other left-leaning shill, let’s just examine this one story. “What state is the best?” is a pretty silly debate. Nobody living in San Diego is going to move to Fargo b/c North Dakota was ranked #1 in quality of life (no offense ND). First, the source: Wikipedia cites “U.S. News and World Report” as criticized for being “dubious”, “disparate” and “arbitrary” (3 words which could, of course, describe almost anything on Wikipedia), but... “U.S. News” does rank Mississippi - in the bottom ten in 6 out of 7 categories & ranked 2nd worst state overall - as having the 6th best quality of life (no offense MS, just unsure how they reached that conclusion). So why is CA dead last? (it actually ranked CA #1 in “Public Health” even though the air quality sucks and ranked the state #32 overall, which they fail to mention) Fox News says CA scored poorly in “environmental quality”, and that the article - according to Fox News - “suggests” Californians are “insufferable.” No explanation of the metric on that, and combing through the article I saw no mention of the word “insufferable”, but... that’s… scary. Not because we can’t be insufferable (we TOTALLY can be - as insufferable as anybody, anywhere), but because the message was clear: “They”… are not you. Look down on this state. Disregard ideas from here - particularly about the environment or social issues - because their environment sucks and the people are so annoying they actually degrade the quality of life - here’s proof! I’ve lived in New England, the deep south, and CA, and I can tell you, “they”… are us. We’re all co-creators of this democracy, and dividing us into opposing camps doesn’t get us closer to solving the problems we’re facing. We’re in this together, people. So next time, when there’s an article about something actually important… let’s stick together & be critical of the messenger before we let them cause us to see a whole group of individuals as “other.” And don’t move here - the traffic is bad enough as it is ?
