As Venezuela unwinds — with extreme food and medicine shortages, rampaging crime and the world's highest rate of inflation — Leopoldo López, the political opposition's most prominent leader sits under house arrest contemplating what might still be possible. Because Leopoldo has been imprisoned or under house arrest for 4 years and prohibited from speaking to the press, @nytmag was unable to send a photographer to take his picture. Luckily, they were able to reach Diana López, his sister, who photographed her brother for the magazine during a recent visit. The portrait has an intimacy and frankness that is powerful, especially considering the great risks Leopoldo has taken by speaking to Wil S. Hylton about the situation in Venezuela. "It's not easy, but I have the responsibility to speak my mind. I've been in prison 4 years now because of speaking my mind, and if I self-censor, I'm beaten by the dictatorship," Leopoldo said. Since the publication of the magazine's article, armed guards from the Venezuelan intelligence service have raided and occupied López's residence. Members of the Venezuelan National Assembly gathered in front of the house, along with local media and citizens, to protest the invasion and threats by the Venezuelan government that Leopoldo will be returned to military prison.
