"There are a lot of people suffering from mental health problems, so we have to sensitize the community so that people living with mental health problems can go to the centre, receive help, and then they can work, and help the development of the community.” Saguedin Kpiémame was recruited by Handicap International (@hi_france) to be a Community Health Worker with the Centre de Santé Mentale in northern Togo. She walks from village to village making sure those with mental health conditions are taking their medications and, where necessary, refers them to the centre.

Over 80% of Togo’s rural population lives below the poverty line making it one of the world’s poorest countries. Poverty is often both a symptom and a cause of a mental health issues. Around the world, an overwhelming majority of people with mental and psychosocial disabilities are living in poverty, poor physical health and are subject to human rights violations. 85% of people in low and middle income countries living with mental health conditions receive no treatment.
