“I’m a firm believer that underneath all of our human niceties is simmering animal behavior, and that’s what this dance is about,” said Robert Kleinendorst of the @paultaylordancecompany. “We get to be 4 angry humans, stomping and glaring — things we can’t do in society.” In “Cloven Kingdom,” a 1985 classic by Paul Taylor being performed as part of the company’s current @lincolncenter run, the dance flickers between grace and ferocity as men and women, wearing tuxedos and gowns, battle their true natures to John Herbert McDowell's arrangement of Corelli, Henry Cowell and Malloy Miller. To create the right mood for this male quartet, Michael Apuzzo said the dancers — he performs with @xwing_baker, @truzdncr and @jsamsonnyc — “have a backstage grunt.” It happens just before they step onstage. “We growl,” said @xwing_baker, “and make sure we’re all pumped up.” Since the section is more than 6 minutes, they need the ritual. “There are other dances where it’s short bursts,” @xwing_baker told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ writer @giadk. “With this, we never catch our breath. It’s a marathon instead of a sprint.” @_flodur made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly series exploring the world of #dance.
