To celebrate International Women’s Day, we asked three of our specialists to discuss the female artists whose work has made an impact on them.

First up is Isabelle d’Amécourt (@isabelle.damecourt), our Paris-based specialist in European Sculpture and Works of Art:

‘So much about women sculptors of the past remains hidden. Women artists from the 10th century onward suffer from a lack of visibility and scholarship. It’s probable that there were quite a few women working, but we don't know who they were.’

‘Behind every important male sculptor, there is a woman. If you think about a 17th- or 18th-century sculptor’s atelier, for instance, I'm sure the opinions, ideas and advice of wives or daughters would have made their way into the work.’

‘Thinking about how few women artists are recognised in my field makes me want to investigate more, and to try to open more people’s eyes to their work.’
