Many of us have seen or heard about Parker Curry. About how the two year old was awestruck by the painting of the first Black First Lady of the United States. About how she had a dance party with Michelle Obama herself. We’ve heard how Michelle declared to her, “Maybe one day I’ll proudly look up at a photo of you!” and how when asked what she saw in the painting she replied with glee, “A queen!” And we saw that after the fact, when asked in an interview whether she’d like to be First Lady or President one day, Parker confidently answered, “President.” With all of this, what sears into my heart perhaps the most is her face in this photo. The look of jaw-dropped wonder. That quintessential spark, that life-changing moment in time when she saw herself immortalized on that wall and saw proof that anything was possible for her. Proving that visualization must come before actualization. And representation leads to manifestation.
