Born Sarah Breedlove on a plantation in Louisiana, Madam C.J. Walker—as she was later known—became the first female self-made millionaire. It all started when she began losing her hair and discovered Annie Turnbo’s “Great Wonderful Hair Grower,” which, according to Walker, magically cured her hair loss. She became a salesperson for Turnbo, but left in 1906 to start her own company, which specialized in homemade products specifically for black women. Walker was a hustler: She sold her products at clubs, churches, and even created a mail-order catalog, eventually employing 3,000 workers—most of whom were door-to-door saleswomen. A champion for women in the workplace, she was also a well renowned philanthropist, known for donating money to organizations like the NAACP. In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re spotlighting lesser-known heroes—from recent and ancient history—who helped pave the way for other women.
