In Nepal Matt would be a “nephew” by age and mentoring even though we have no blood relation. It’s a nice way of understanding age relationships. ??Four years ago while climbing Black Line in the Gallatin Canyon , Montana he was commenting on how grim the interview with the @yosemitenps concessionaire went. When the job outfit asked if he was a climber he could sense the interview was done. The Curry Co (or whatever the current company is) isn’t interested in hiring climbers. When I mentioned our family restaurant, Priest Station, is 20 minutes from the park entrance and they need help we began a positive conversation. My brother @stevenanker was super excited to bring him on board. Matt works the summer season, climbs in the Sierra and saves up for expeditions to Patagonia and Alaska. This year he and his buddy were the first up Cerro Torre, bivying a pitch below the summit.
When I was his age the old guard would take me out. Now I’m that age it’s my turn. Seeing the gleam of motivation, the sparkle of possibility and the potential of dedication inspires me. Plus he offers to carry the heavy pack as I once did for my mentors. ? Thanks to my “nieces and nephews” out there. You keep me fit and happy. ⛰
