It’s hard to imagine from this distance, but when Hubert de Givenchy, who died today in Paris at the age of 91, first appeared on the scene, he was the equivalent of what we call an “emerging designer” today, one who believed that “the classical never meant boring.” Today he is remembered as the couturier whose name is associated with elegance—and Audrey Hepburn.
