Sometimes, life creeps up on ya & the next thing you know...You’re 85!! ((:0)) Wow...What. A. Rollercoaster. It has been an absolutely beautiful journey & I feel like I’m just getting started! It seems as though it was only yesterday that I was this scrawny little kid sticking out like a sore thumb in my high school yearbook. As I reflect on the road behind me & the road ahead...I can’t help but think about how grateful I am to be alive. I should’ve never made it out of the gangs in Chicago (in the 30’s), but God had other plans for me & music was my way out. I’ve been told many times that I wasn’t good enough, smart enough, or simply would never achieve my goals, but as I’ve said before, I’m fortunate to have learned the power of being underestimated. If people overestimate you, they get in your way, but if they underestimate you, they get out of your way. Don’t forget it!!...But even though I’ve worked extremely hard on my own, I cannot forget to thank the people who’ve helped mentor me along the way. From Basie to Clark Terry, to Dizzy, to my family...you name it. Every mistake, every encounter, every person, every experience (Free & Easy, The Color Purple, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Roots, We are the World, etc.)...It all got me here to this exact day, so...thank you. YOLO SO KOKO (you only live once, so keep on keepin’ on)!!...Thanks for the bday love!
